German  naval forces led by Vice Admiral Graf Maximillian Von Spee defeat a British Royal Navy Squadron commanded by Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock off the coast of central Chile near the city of Coronel.  One thousand six hundred officers and men perished including Cradock.
