Battle of Neuve Chapelle. British forces captured the village and the enemy’s trenches in the vicinity after a severe artillery bombardment. Casualties on both sides heavy. This was the first serious British advance since the Battle of the Marne, and effected a straightening of the British line. It was officially estimated that the German losses at this place on this and succeeding three days numbered 17,000.
