This blog supports the Heritage Lottery Funded Project: The Extraordinary and the Everyday: A Year in the Life of a Rural Community, 1914-15.
The project charts the life of the small rural village of Avon Dassett in Warwickshire during the first year of the war from August 1914-August 1915.
Follow the daily lives of the villagers coming to terms with a war which they originally supposed would be over by Christmas. And also the fortunes of the men who enlisted.
The result will be a snapshot of village life during a time of crisis supported by contemporary images, songs and videos. The blog draws on local archival sources such as newspapers, Parish Council minutes, the school log book and the parish registers.
We are also collecting and documenting memories, documents and artefacts from present day members of the local community.
See here for a report and photos from the project launch on August 3rd 2014.
