Cake Not Hate Get Together

The event is taking place on Saturday 19th October at the Royal Spa Centre, Leamington Spa CV32 4HN, 11:00 – 14:00.

The event is free, but we are hoping as many attendees as possible bring their own homemade cakes & bakes to share. We have Trish Adudu returning as our emcee this year, and our main speaker is Figen Murray. Figen’s son, Martyn Hett, was one of the 22 people who lost their lives in the Manchester Arena Attack. Figen will deliver a powerful and inspirational talk about her experience of forgiveness and messages to bring communities together.

We will also have a drama piece delivered on the day depicting how a local hate crime was dealt with in Warwickshire; this will be followed by a Q&A expert panel of Warwickshire Police, the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Crown Prosecution Service, for attendees to ask them questions.

Attendees can book on to the event by going to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/warwickshires-cake-not-hate-get-together-2019-tickets-68125949549

Walk of Hope for Brain Tumour Research – 28 September

Brain Tumour Research are organising a charity event called the Walk of Hope on 28th September at Hatton Locks, Warwickshire.

Brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age. What’s more they kill more adults and children under the age of 40 than any other cancer… yet historically just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.

They are building a network of experts in sustainable research at dedicated Centres of Excellence whilst influencing the Government and larger cancer charities to invest more nationally and we are the only national charity in the UK that is dedicated to raising funds for continuous and sustainable scientific research into brain tumours.

Here are a few stories from Brain Tumour Research patients and supporters who live in Warwickshire:

Avon Dassett Mini Lit Fest

This June saw the first of what is hoped to become an annual fixture.  A mini festival party to commemorate the birthday of Thomas Perry, the gentleman who gave the Reading Room to the village.  Many thanks to all those who contributed, and to those who came along to support this event.
With a literature theme, we enjoyed tea & cake and local authors were able to showcase their books. Angela Perry’s children’s book “The Adventures of Alfie” proved very popular, as well as books from Ian Mathie, Roy Jenkins, the Avon Dassett history book and a cookbook from Shutford.
There were many posts on the “Recommendations Board” which included:
  • Bill Bryson, “Notes From a Small Island”, non fiction, light, easy, humorous,
  • Khaled Hosseini ” A Thousand Splendid Suns”,
  • David Nicholls “Us”, fiction, excellent,
  • Santa Montefiore “The Temptation of Gracie”, A fab book, love it, love it, (P.S. it’s rude),
  • Antonio Iturbe “The Librarian of Auschwitz”
  • David Walliams, “Gangsta Granny”, a children’s book really but much enjoyed by an adult.
The Banbury branch of Oxfam Books brought some of their wares, and made £127.50 from sales and donations.
Next year, 2020, marks the 200th Birthday Anniversary, so make a date in your diary to come along to The Reading Room on Saturday 13th June.
